A sword is a weapon that is used to wound, slay, and drive the enemy away from further combat. The sword that you are instructed to take is the Sword of the Spirit which the Lord says is the word of God which He will reveal, and His Spirit which He will pour upon you.
D&C 27:18
And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of my Spirit, which I will pour out upon you, and my word which I reveal unto you, and be agreed as touching all things whatsoever ye ask of me, and be faithful until I come, and ye shall be caught up, that where I am ye shall be also. Amen.
Wow, what an awesome weapon! It’s quick, it’s powerful and it’s sharp!
D&C 6:2
Behold, I am God; give heed unto my word, which is quick and powerful, sharper than a two-edged sword, to the dividing asunder of both joints and marrow; therefore give heed unto my words.
His Spirit Poured Out Upon You
As you consistently put on the other pieces of the armor of God, you will become receptive to the Spirit. You will feel His Spirit confirming to you that He is pleased with you.
Mosiah 25:24
And they were called the people of God. And the Lord did pour out his Spirit upon them, and they were blessed, and prospered in the land.
His Word Revealed Unto You
You can receive personal revelation from the Lord. Ask in prayer for the Lord to guide.
D&C 11:5
Therefore, if you will ask of me you shall receive; if you will knock it shall be opened unto you.
Counsel with the Lord about all of the things in your life.
Alma 37:37
Counsel with the Lord in all thy doings, and he will direct thee for good; yea, when thou liest down at night lie down unto the Lord, that he may watch over you in your sleep; and when thou risest in the morning let thy heart be full of thanks unto God; and if ye do these things, ye shall be lifted up at the last day.
Learn to recognize what the Spirit feels like. Learn how to Hear Him. There are different voices competing for your attention. Chose to listen to the one that brings peace and invites and entices you to do good.
D&C 19:23
Learn of me, and listen to my words; walk in the meekness of my Spirit, and you shall have peace in me.
Use the Sword of the Spirit
Chase Away Evil
The sword of the Spirit can be used to chase away the forces of evil. If you will use it, you will come to see just how powerful the word of God and His Spirit can be!
Leviticus 26:7-8
And ye shall chase your enemies, and they shall fall before you by the sword. And five of you shall chase an hundred, and an hundred of you shall put ten thousand to flight: and your enemies shall fall before you by the sword.
When the enemy attacks you with temptation, doubt, or fears, just like Jesus did, you can speak the words of God to drive back the devil. This will remind you and the enemy that you are a warrior for Christ!
Matthew 4:3-4
And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
Jacob 7:8
But behold, the Lord God poured in his Spirit into my soul, insomuch that I did confound him in all his words.
Share Truth
When you are prepared to share the truth, the Spirit will give you the words to speak. This has power to pierce through the hearts of people and bring them to the light.
Matthew 11:19-20
But when they deliver you up, take no thought how or what ye shall speak: for it shall be given you in that same hour what ye shall speak. For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you.
Get Direction for Your Life
Be obedient to God’s command. The more you follow promptings from the Spirit the more promptings you will receive. Taking the Holy Spirit for your guide is how you take the Sword of the Spirit!
D&C 11:12-14
And now, verily, verily, I say unto thee, put your trust in that Spirit which leadeth to do good—yea, to do justly, to walk humbly, to judge righteously; and this is my Spirit.Verily, verily, I say unto you, I will impart unto you of my Spirit, which shall enlighten your mind, which shall fill your soul with joy; And then shall ye know, or by this shall you know, all things whatsoever you desire of me, which are pertaining unto things of righteousness, in faith believing in me that you shall receive.
The Spirit of God is a powerful weapon that when taken renders Satan’s deceptions useless!
D&C 45:57-58
For they that are wise and have received the truth, and have taken the Holy Spirit for their guide, and have not been deceived—verily I say unto you, they shall not be hewn down and cast into the fire, but shall abide the day. And the earth shall be given unto them for an inheritance; and they shall multiply and wax strong, and their children shall grow up without sin unto salvation.
