Take the Shield of Faith

Take the Shield of Faith

When it comes to the Armor of God, the Lord says that above all you need to take the shield of faith. This is very important for your protection, so you need to understand what it means and do it.

Ephesians 6:16
Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

Doubt and Fear Weaken Faith

First of all, let's be clear what faith is not. When the Lord wants to teach about having faith, He often points out some problems that are likely. Faith cannot be present when there is doubt or fear.

D&C 6:36
Look unto me in every thought; doubt not, fear not.

Matthew 14:31
And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?

Mark 4:40
And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith?

Quench Fiery Darts

The enemy is attacking you with fiery darts, but by your faith, the Lord will protect you! The fiery darts are the torment of the wicked.

D&C 76:44
Wherefore, he saves all except them—they shall go away into everlasting punishment, which is endless punishment, which is eternal punishment, to reign with the devil and his angels in eternity, where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched, which is their torment

When you love God and trust that He loves you, this there is hope, and the torment of fear can be cast out and replaced with faith.

1 John 4:18
There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.

By having faith, the fiery darts are quenched, or put out.

How to Have Faith

The faith that we are talking about here is faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Believe in Jesus.

Ether 12:18
And neither at any time hath any wrought miracles until after their faith; wherefore they first believed in the Son of God.

Belive His words.

Mosiah 4:9
Believe in God; believe that he is, and that he created all things, both in heaven and in earth; believe that he has all wisdom, and all power, both in heaven and in earth; believe that man doth not comprehend all the things which the Lord can comprehend.

Believe that He has all power.

D&C 11:10
Behold, thou hast a gift, or thou shalt have a gift if thou wilt desire of me in faith, with an honest heart, believing in the power of Jesus Christ, or in my power which speaketh unto thee;

Because you believe what the Lord has said, you can trust that He loves you and will He take care of you.

Proverbs 29:25
The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the Lord shall be safe.

Jeremiah 17:7
Blessed is the man that trusteth in the Lord, and whose hope the Lord is.

Knowing the words of the Lord are true gives you something to hope for.

Alma 32:21
And now as I said concerning faith—faith is not to have a perfect knowledge of things; therefore if ye have faith ye hope for things which are not seen, which are true.

When you really trust the Lord and hope for the promises that He has made, you can surrender your life, every care and concern to Him and let Him take care of you.

Psalms 55:22
Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.

If you want your faith to grow, you need to act like you desire to believe. Live like it is true, act like you believe by following His teachings, and doing what He says to do.

Alma 32:27
But behold, if ye will awake and arouse your faculties, even to an experiment upon my words, and exercise a particle of faith, yea, even if ye can no more than desire to believe, let this desire work in you, even until ye believe in a manner that ye can give place for a portion of my words.

As you exercise your faith, it will grow until it becomes unshaken, and you will see miracles!

Jacob 4:6
Wherefore, we search the prophets, and we have many revelations and the spirit of prophecy; and having all these witnesses we obtain a hope, and our faith becometh unshaken, insomuch that we truly can command in the name of Jesus and the very trees obey us, or the mountains, or the waves of the sea.

The Lord is Our Shield

It is the Lord, your High Commander who you can trust to be a shield against the wicked.

Proverbs 30:5
Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him.

Psalms 33:20-21
Our soul waiteth for the Lord: he is our help and our shield. For our heart shall rejoice in him, because we have trusted in his holy name.

Faith on His Name

It is only through faith in the name of Jesus Christ that you can be saved. That is why we are taught to pray, and ask for blessings in His name.

Moroni 7:26
And after that he came men also were saved by faith in his name; and by faith, they become the sons of God. And as surely as Christ liveth he spake these words unto our fathers, saying: Whatsoever thing ye shall ask the Father in my name, which is good, in faith believing that ye shall receive, behold, it shall be done unto you.

Repentance is through Jesus, so covenants like baptism and the sacrament are made in His name.

D&C 20:29
And we know that all men must repent and believe on the name of Jesus Christ, and worship the Father in his name, and endure in faith on his name to the end, or they cannot be saved in the kingdom of God.

And you can even cast out Satan in Jesus’ name.

D&C 84:65-67
And these signs shall follow them that believe— In my name they shall do many wonderful works; In my name they shall cast out devils;

Great Faith Has Power

When doubt and fear are gone, and you put your faith in Jesus Christ you will be a very powerful warrior.

Matthew 21:21-22
Jesus answered and said unto them, Verily I say unto you, If ye have faith, and doubt not, ye shall not only do this which is done to the fig tree, but also if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; it shall be done. And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.
